The photo series, MENTAL, strives to help raise awareness and inspire discussion surrounding mental illness in our culture. Get the stigma OUT. Let go of the shame and experiences that seemingly occur in shadow. Release the fear of asking for help, finding support. Let this no longer be a taboo subject. With more awareness, MENTAL endeavors toward hope for healing, recovery and living a life feeling more strong and self-possessed. This series acknowledges strongly that it is not only females that struggle with mental instability and that all gender identities deal with a myriad of mental health instabilities; this series is ongoing. Anyone can experience domestic violence.
Domestic violence is not a one-time experience.
It is an insidious problem that permeates all through our culture.

85% of intimate partner violence victims are women.

A woman is beaten to death every 9 seconds in the U.S.

It takes, on average, 7 times for a woman to leave their domestic abuser in finality.

Most of this is because of financial abuse and control. Most cannot leave because they have nowhere to go and no funds to leave.

40-45% of women in domestic abuse relationships also experience sexual assault and/or rape.

It has been recorded that 18,500,000 mental health care visits are due to intimate partner violence.

8,000,000 - The number of days of paid work leave women have to take off to deal with domestic violence every year.

1 in 4 women experience this abuse and 1 in 7 men experience severe violence at the hands of an intimate partner.

There IS support. There is a way to leave, recover, heal and lead a life full of healthy loving relationships.
Violent Stories presents this work for more visibility & awareness around this tragic subject. It is often hidden from view in our culture. May this bring light to a subject largely unaddressed. This is an ongoing series.
